Programme overview

Enhance your capacity to improve patient outcomes and health services.

If you have a degree in nursing or a health-related area and you'd like to extend your knowledge and skills for advanced practice in the health sector, this qualification will extend your knowledge in the practice area in which you're already working and give you a formal qualification in recognition of your professional development. The Master of Nursing is an applied, clinically-focused programme characterised by advanced study in nursing and health sciences. You will develop advanced nursing knowledge, along with higher-level skills in critical analysis, constructive synthesis, and advanced practice and research within your specialty area. The programme has been specifically designed to prepare you as a nurse for advanced practice roles, including nurse practitioner and is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a 'Masters with a clinical focus, including the content for preparation for nurse prescribing'. Part of the requirement for the programme is the completion of a 90-credit thesis. If you're completing the Master of Nursing and you intend to apply for Nurse Practitioner registration (as required by the Nursing Council of New Zealand), some specific courses must form part of your programme.
